Tests and their Importance

For most of us, a test is a pain in the neck (or some other place) but a necessary part of schooling. While I do not place a great deal of emphasis on test grades, our school's grading policy does. I can certainly understand the idea that "you don't like chemistry" or "you don't get it". And trust me, I don't take it personally - it's something you are required to take and something that I understand pretty well so I'm trying to help you understand as well.

Imagine my surprise when I graded the first tests we took (now almost 2 weeks ago) that dealt only with chemistry concepts. The average of the 3 classes was somewhere around 67 - not a grade which represents the collective intelligence of you folks.

Someone in each class (no names) asked if I would give "a curve" or "extra credit". The answer is and will always be "no". I want you to think about something here - and to give me some feedback (that means leave me a comment - this is how you earn bonus points for your grade - by leaving a thoughtful comment). How would you feel if you knew that your doctor, your dentist, your lawyer, your surgeon, your pilot (you get the idea) got their professional license by getting extra credit points or a curve or made a really neat poster instead of passing their courses because they studied and knew what they were doing?

Just something to consider....

Hope you studied this time!

i completely agree with u, and i think that u need to earn the grade u get, BUT sometimes extra credit or curves can really help someone out,

I think each person desevres their grades and no extracredit unless there is a special circumstance, because what if you, Ms. Hutson, had gotten extra credit in college/ highschool, you would not be the teacher you are and we wouldnt learn what we learn in your class.

I do believe in curves if everyone studied and it was truly a hard test that was difficult for everyone and it was different then the review, but if it is what we have studied and isnt like a pop quiz or anything and the material was taught i dont think it is right to give one although most ppl do appreciate it. If i think about it isnt right but at the same time if it was offered i wouldnt complain...AMANDA BEARD

To me curves are just another way to cheat through school, so to me curves should not be given b/c u deserve the grade you get, b/c if u study then u shouldnt hav a problem on the test. Which i learned from taking todays test and the last test.

THis is Ryan Lee

i agree i guess. I mean, that would kinda suck to get in an airplane and have your pilot come in over the intercom and say, "good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, my name is Capt. Roger such in such and im going to be your pilot today. now, if you will look in your tray compartment in front of you, you will see all the instructions for safety. oh and by the way i graduated from a school were the teachers dont care if i knew the material soooooo i have no idea what is going on and you will probbaly want to look at that stuff."

yea

i would not hesitate to slap those teachers in the face!!!

If the pilot or dentist got a curve then we would have people not knowing how to do their job. So people need to stop getting mad about the work we have to do, just study and u will get the grade you deserve.

well i think sometimes a curve is very helpful but not always the right thing to do for one we are kids not doctors or lawyers (well not most of us)we are just kids we need a break every now and then and i know we are becoming adults but not yet we still have a while to go and a little help now and then wouldnt kill anybody i know we cant count on it or should count on it but we (most students in the class)work very hard to do the best we can. but all im saying is a little help wouldnt be a bad thing

I know what ur saying because if u got on a airplane or hired a lawyer knowing that the only way he made it through school was because he had curves and extra credit, then yea it would scare me and i wouldnt feel as positive with that person as i would knowing that they knew what they were doing. weston

this is stephanie...um i understand where you are coming from, i think i'm really good at biology and physics. Not understanding chemistry discourages me cause i'm almost posotive i want to be a sceince teacher some day. I just want to understand more and i keep getting frustrated, i do believe you are a very intelligent woman and i thank you so much for taking the time and effort to help us.

i understand what you are talking about and its pretty ture. If they did do that were they got there degree by a cruve i would not want to be on that airplane or courthouse. so i can see why you dont want to give curves. nicholas farias

i agree with the "no curve" or "no extra credit" policy. There should probably be no reason why someone should fail a test in this class. Most of the time a failing grade is because someone did not study or just didnt pay attention in class and they should not be priveledged with a better grade for not studying.

hi mrs. hudson, its sarah holder. In response to your question, i would like to inform you that i agree. alot of people don't realize that when they enter college, a professor won't think a "curve" is right or neccesary. therefore, thank you for letting other students in our class know that there is a world outside of axtell texas that doesn't revolve around grades or being the "best."

i wouldnt feel safe because they didnt learn the stuff it required so then they get under the pressure and they dont know how to do it.

Mrs. Hutson, this is Megan. What you said is very true...people in our class even me (sometimes) do not know that the answers can just be handed to you! Imagine if that was true..we would have doctors who do brain surgery because they got a curve to pass. No thank you! I want to live! So I understand that we need to put in the effort to earn our grades!!

josh- i think it is a good idea because it gives a chance to pass for some people
