October 30th -
Today in class we are discussing (and seeing a demonstration of) radioactivity. Common uses of radiation include medical and energy needs - we are all familiar with x-rays and have at least some sense of the nuclear power produced in the state of Texas. However, we are not as familiar with the use of radiation when considering our food supply. In many countries around the world (where refrigeration is not available in homes or stores), irradiating food is a primary method of food preservation. It is not at all unusual to go to a market, pick up a carton (or jug) of milk from a shelf at room temperature and buy it to drink later - it does not need to be kept cold because it will not spoil. This is one advantage to irradiating food. Use the link below to read a document from the United States' FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Then answer the question below.
http://www.fda.gov/opacom/catalog/irradbro.html
Citing information from the brochure (that means you have to read it) give 2 reasons why you:
1. would feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods.
2. would not feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods.
Please note, there is not a "choose one of these" option - answer both questions!
This is due by Friday. See you in class.

1) I know it couldnt hurt me or there is only a slight chance, and i know that it prolongs the life of the food or drind i am buying.
2) I am not sure but it could cause radiation poisoning past 40 years of use because thats as long it has been tested, it could potentially make the food lose nutrients and minerals.
Lavinia Tanasa
1. i know it cant hurt me because an agency determined that the process is safe and effective in decreasing or eliminating harmful bacteria, and also it preserves food longer.
2. the foods are exposed to radiant energy, and also only 40 countries allow it, its not comfortable knowing that some countries outlawed it.
Q:1. would feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods.
A: I personally would feel comfortable buying irridiated foods because they help reduce the hazards of food-borne illnesses by decreasing and eliminating bacteria, and because it ensures that there are no otehr harmful organisms in the food. Why not be safe and go ahead and eat something with less of a risk of making you sick.
2. would not feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods
I would not feel comfortable because it would always be in the back of my mind how harmful radiation is in other situations and i would beleive it could maybe have a bad effect. Another reason i wouldnt feel comfortable is becuase sometimes the changes it causes in the food might result in a harmful effect on ones body.
Q: 1. would feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods.
A: I would feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods because it is a method of technology to enhance the safety of the nation's food supply. Knowing irradiation advantages such as reducing food-borne hazards, eliminating spoilage and harmful bacteria, and ensuring that harmful organisms are not in the food makes me feel alot better about the food that i'm eating. The products will keep fresh longer and enhance the safety over all. All these positive things about irradiation gives me a better understanding and feeling about what im buying and eating.
Q:2. would not feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods.
A: I would not feel comfortable buying or eating irradiated foods because of the use of radiation. Knowing all the disadvantages of irradiation such as the slight raise in cost, a small loss of nutrients, and the knowledge of the radiation used in the method. Just knowing that radiation is used for it will cause many people to have a negative outlook on the whole process.
The last comment posted was for Leah Taylor! Im sorry! I forget to put my name! thx!
1) I would feel okay, i would like it because the food would last longer and it would save money, but in the back of my head i would be worried.
2)I wouldn't feel alight just because it deals with radiation and might make the nutrients lower than in regular food.
I would feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods, because -
a)It is endorsed by the World Health Organization
b) It is proven to eliminate harmful bacteria, and make food last longer than without irradiation.
I would not feel comfortable buying irradiated foods because
a) there has been no reseach on the long term effects on eating irradiated foods
b)Irradiating foods could potentially alter food or nutirents, and there is not enough research on the topic of mizing the foods with other outside elements.

I would feel comfortable if our food is irridated and it would be easier to ship foods across the world.
I would not feel comfortable because it IS radiation and i dont want to be a mutant.

1. yes it said it doesnt make food radio active if anything it helps the food by killing harmful bacteria that may other wise be very harmful and it also makes foods last longer
2.it wouldnt really bother me that bad because it only makes the food last a little longer then other wise but i wouldnt have a problem with its one of those things that dont really matter.
WTYM
1. I would have no problem eating irradiated foods the only reason people don't like the idea is because they are not used to it.
2. Electricity bills would go down from not needing a refrgorator.
NIKKI TERGERSON
i would feel comfortable buying irradiated food because it is so far found safer than otherwise. i would be desitant because i am not used to it and it is weird and i get a little upset if you take my food away.
julie king
i would fill arlight if i ate it becasue im sure that i have ate some before and i am fine. or at lest i think i am. ~nico~
This Megan Watson,
Good Reasons:
1) It doesn't make the food radioactive, it's like a luggage scanner.
2) It kills harmful bacteria and foodborne illnesses like e-coli.
Bad Reasons:
1) They cost slightly more.
2) It takes away some of the nutrients.
1. I would comfortable with buying irridiated food because their is nothing really embarrasing about and if it gets rid of harmful bacteria that's a good enough reason for me.
2. The only reason i probably wouldn't is because the radiation exposure, because even though its controlled it still might have a later effect on the food that just hasn't happened yet.
1.they would seem to laste longer
they would aslo look just like the non irradiated food so it would be hard to tell them apart
2.i would not like to drink hot milk...gross!
and i've never had irradiated food so i'm not sure if i would be comfortable with it.
~stephanie luna
this is nathan
1. i would feel comfortable buying it knowing its not spoiled or bad.
2. i wolu also knowthat i wolud be eating food with radiation.
1. i wouldnt like it cause it would taste different
2. and it wolu be at different temp. and it would be nasty just drinking room temp. milk
This is byron.. I wouldnt mind buying the food, it last longer and you dont have to worry about it going bad. If it taste the same its okay. One reason why I would not want to buy the food is just knowing that radiation is in it, and radiation causes cancer. It aslo stays at room temp. thats kinda nasty I couldnt drink hot milk or anything like that. well ill see ya in class.
1. would feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods.
Yes, i would feel comfortable buying and also eating irradiated foods because The Food and Drug Administration has approved that it is safe to consume. Also it is better for the food it reduces spoilage bacteria, insects and parasites.
2. would not feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods
One reason whould be i dont know exactly what it is and the other reason it can attract other harmful bacteria.
-Leigh Ann K.
i think it couldn't hurt you that much its not that bad i wouldn't mind eating it, it makes he food last longer so that its fresh and it doesn't really harm you but as for not wanting to eat them i could see where you could get that depending on how much radiation they use on it and the food will prolly not taste as good
Charlie
On the first question i would feel safe cuz it kills all that bad bacteria. The radition is so small i dont think that that it matters.
BUT on the second question it is radiation and that can prolly have long term effects. I mean i wouldnt want to eat that stuff and then it makes my sperm sterile so i cant have kids. plus, i dont think it would be cool to look in my cabinet and see a glowing jug of milk. haha
ryan lee
i think that we could eat it and it would be alright beacuse they do it in other countires and it does not harm them.If the did not work than people would be getting sick.If it were a new thing preservng food and it was not tested and tested i would not try it. They would not be giving us stuff that is bad for us. and besides im sure that by now that i have ate them before and as far as i know i am alright. ~nick f~
My answer to Question number one is that some things we are used to either being set out or we are used to it being refrigerated. But people in other countries that is how they have to eat food and lquids. They dont have refrigeraters.
My answer to the Question number two is that we are used to having refrigeration. So unless we got used to having things not refrigerated, then its going to be uncomfortable. And we are used to having things germ free.

I LOVE YOU MRS. H!!

The first question: I would feel better about what i ate because it would be very clean and effecient.
The second question: In a way it probaly wouldnt taste the same and i like how my food tastes. Plus, it would be kind of wierd to buy some bananas from HEB and then buy some from WalMart and the ones from walmart last longer because they are irradiated. Weston Popham
sorry i misunderstood here is my 2 other answers. i would try it because it might be better healthwise , maybe prrevent cancer or something. but there again you never know it could cause cancer and other diseaes
julie king
yeah i would because im sure i already have and it kills harmful bacteria and makes the food last longer. the only reason i wouldnt like it would be because it might be at room temperature.
-Taylor Dunlap
This is Sarah Holder.
1. I would feel comfortable eating the food because it goes throught a process that is approved by the fda.
2. I would feel comfortable eating and buying the food because if there were any risks, then it would not be for sale.
1. I would not feel comfortable eating and buying the food because it might harm me later after i have consumed it, considering the process
2. I would not feel comfortable eating and buying the food because it might be out of date or the fda might have made a calculation error in approving it
Yes it would not have any bacteria and would be able to last longer. like fruits and i have already ate them so what does it matter.
I wouldnt like them if they were hot i like everything i drink to be cold like milk it would b at room temperature.
-Greg Garrett
Hey this is Tyler and...
1. I would feel ok about eating and drinking food becuase it doesnt spoil and its keeps clean. Its also been said by the fda that its ok to eat.
2. I wouldnt feel comfortable eating it because it isnt refrierated and it has radioactivity in it.

1. i would feel comfortable buying and eating the food because it had been processed.
2. i would feel comfortable buying and eating the food because it was fda approved
1. i would not feel comfortable buying or eating the food because the might had made bad calculations
2. i would not feel comfortable eating and buying it because it might had been out of date or the process might had been wrong and it would harm me later in life.

1. I would feel comfertable eating it because it is aproved by the fda and because people eat it all the time and they are ok.
2. I also don't feel comfertable about it because there is radioactive materials in it and because people make a big deal about it and they wouldn't if there wasn't anything wrong with it in the first place, so it makes me wonder a bit.
Kalyn Yose
I would feel comfortable buying and eating irradeated foods because, it can kill harmful bacteria. Also it reduces spoilage bacteria, insects, and parasites. It also does not make food radioactive.
I would not feel comfortable buying and eating irradiated foods because, Its more expensive to buy food that has been irradiated. Another reason why is, it may cause the food to look different or taste different.

1)Yes, i would feel comfortable about eating irradiated foods, because some things you eat exposed to the radiation of the microwave taste better than it would being cooked.
2)No, i would not feel comfortable about eating irradiated foods, because of the exposure of radiation could possibly not be healthy to you if you get to much of it, personally i like eating homeade cooked food.

Two reason why i would buy irradiated food--
1. This method of preservation has been proven safe by the FDA.
2. It is easier and does not have to be kept in a refrigerator which uses energy.
Two reasons why I would not buy irradiated food.
1. These products cost slightly more than regular food products.
2.They are not widely available yet and would be hard to come by.
